Biography

A little about

Hello, I’m glad you’ve found your way here. The musical path for me has had many turns, and has been blessed with many meaningful encounters and experiences. At present I am based in Riga, Latvia where I am an active composer and musician while pursuing a research degree in systematic musicology.

My father is a musician, instrument builder and professor in theology, so I suppose it was not unusual that I began playing drums at an early age in church. In my early 20’s I formed a rock band and a few years later toured music festivals around the world. I have many good memories of those times, and life-long friends. When that came to an end, I spent time searching and travelling for a while before deciding to pursue an education in music.

I moved to Copenhagen in 2010 to study composition under Hans Abrahamsen at the Royal Danish Academy of Music. There I was introduced to music from the Baltics, and decided to continue my Masters studies in Riga under Rolands Kronlaks at Jāzep Vītols Latvian Music Academy where I graduated in 2015.

Most of my composition work has attempted to abstract the forces and phenomena of nature and physics, while expressing a human kind of poetry in certain moments. It has also been about working with ancient and future techniques, and often refers to a kind of wonder or mortality. I am so grateful for the training I received as a composer, and for so many chances to hear music from my imagination come to life under skilled hands. My work has happily seen performances by several of Latvias finest musicians and ensembles, including Sinfonietta Riga, and the Professional Orchestra Riga. Selected compositions can be heard here.

Outside of the whole process and community of composing 20th century classical music, I have some personal experimental projects. This is where different interests can mix a little… performing in improvisation with others is great fun, and so is creating music and visuals informed by electronic dance and neuroscience! There's more about that on the performance page.

Other than that I also have had several wonderful collaborations with film-makers, animators, game designers, authors, visual artists, dancers and choreographers. See and hear examples of these commercial projects here.

As an ending note I’d say I love being a part of it all, and everyone I’ve had the pleasure of playing with. See you down the road I hope!
